Propagating – Taking plant cuttings to grow new plants. (Rough notes)
Some Notes from How to Successfully Take Cuttings of Herbs (growveg.com.au)
- suitable for shrubby plants like lavender, marjoram, oregano, sage, thyme
- best to take softwood cuttings – at least 2-4 inches – in spring (tho it can also be done when stems are more mature). Softwood cuttings in springs are bursting with energy and growth.
- best to take cuttings in morning
- during dry weather, water the plant the day before
- take side shoots that have no flowers or buds
- take more cuttings than you need (because not likely to 100% success with all cuttings)
- clean cut just below leaf node (where leaf joins to stem).
- cut at angle (increase surface for rooting)
- remove leaves from 1-2 inch of lower stem
- cuttings need high humidity
- in good light but not in direct sunlight
- might take around 3 weeks, or longer, for cutting to root
- as soon as cutting has rooted, transplant into final pot or into garden
Alternatively you can propagate plants via layering. See: How to Propagate Perennial Crops by Layering (growveg.com.au)
